Pros and Cons of Samsung Galaxy S4

The Positives and Negatives of Samsung's Galaxy S4 :

Even though the iPhone has set the standard for years as the smartphone that everyone wants, Samsung has done a terrific job of turning the tables these last couple of years. Their Galaxy S series of phones started as a blatant iPhone imitator, but it has steadily developed its own identity and become a legitimate threat to Apple's juggernaut. With the recent release of the company's latest Galaxy S4, the question shifts to what pros and cons there are. One of the biggest benefits to buying the S4 is its design. Although last year's S3 took a nature-inspired approach with curves all over and nature sounds in the UI, this year's device takes a step back from that. The result is a phone that lands somewhere in an amazing middle behind taking cues from nature to form a sleek device while also being more ergonomic. The screen is also larger while the overall device is smaller, making it an improved option.

The screen isn't the only aspect that's seen improvement. All of the specs have been ramped up tremendously. Gone is the dual-core processor, replaced instead by either a quad-core or eight-core processor depending on which variant you buy. From a hardware perspective, the phone simply stands head and shoulders above all of its competition. The software side is similarly advanced: Samsung's expanded on the Air Gestures that it introduced with the Galaxy S3, and has taken some of the S-Pen features found in its Note series of devices and brought them to the S4. The result is a Galaxy S4 that lets you swipe through photos, answer calls, scroll the webpages and more - all without touching the phone.

Besides the design, internal specs and software, there is yet another benefit to the S4. The device features an incredible 13-megapixel camera. It takes stunning photos that are true-to-life, and features an incredible amount of software and shooting modes. Users can remove objects from photos, take time-shifted photos and change the faces of subjects in the photos. It's a photographer enthusiast's dream, and Samsung's attention to detail on the camera software makes it stand out from other manufacturers, who normally include a basic camera app with devices.

With all of these pros, what are the cons of the Galaxy S4? There are minor nitpicks that apply to a small amount of people, such as iPhone users having to get used to a new app ecosystem if they're switching over. The one universal complaint for the phone, though, is that it can simply feel overwhelming. Samsung has packed so many features into the device that it's hard for tech geeks to keep track of every little thing that it can do. The S4 includes and IR blaster that lets it function as a remote control. That might be a major feature on any other phone, but it's buried near the bottom of new things on the S4.

Aside from that one little gripe, though, there are no downsides to buying the S4. It is, with little room for argument, the best phone on the market not made by Apple. The only caveat is that new buyers will need to show a little patience with learning how to use it.
